National Education
Citizenship development is just as important as character development in the holistic growth of our pupils. Creating societal awareness and concern are the very first few steps essential to develop the rootedness of our pupils to our country. Teachers and pupils keep themselves abreast of the current affairs through monthly discussion on key NE issues and provide possible solutions to the challenges faced.
Termly NE Level Competition are organised to further encourage pupils to build on their knowledge and further strengthen the sense of ownership in learning more about their country. Pupils from various countries were also invited to organise the International Friendship Day to share their unique culture and practices with their peers. Our NE Ambassadors published the school’s Termly NE newsletters which includes puzzles and stories with the objectives of promoting and showing appreciation for the events. They are also involved in the SIF Project, “Tampines, My Home” where they have had the chance to interview the ministers, published storybooks and produce card game based on their hometown.
TOTAL DEFENCE COMMEMMORATION
Total Defence day serves to remind our pupils that Singapore is defensible and is worth defending, and we ourselves must defend Singapore. Every Singaporean needs to play their part. TPS commemorated Total Defence Day on 9th Feb 2010. This year, the PSG prepared boiled tapioca and sweet potatoes for all the pupils and staff for a ‘food rationing’ experience while going through the slideshow on the importance of Total Defence.
The pupils then watched a 12min video clip on “Food Control during the Japanese Occupation” to gain some insight on what life was like during the Japanese Occupation. Police officers from Tampines Neighbourhood Police Centre set up a mini-exhibition on “Countering Terrorism & Theft” and interacted with our pupils throughout the day.
The police officer then sounded their siren, which signalled the start of an exciting assembly talk on the issues of “Theft, Bullying and Loan Shark Runners”. The pupils were amazed by the issues raised and showed their appreciation to the Police Force with thundering applause at the end.
Racial Harmony 2010
Embracing Diversity, Building Community
Every year, the school celebrates Racial Harmony Day with the purpose of developing mutual understanding between peers, enhancing the racial and religious harmony through experiencing the various aspects of one another’s cultural practices.
The sub-theme for this year’s celebration was “Wedding Celebrations”. The PSG parents set up traditional wedding displays for the four different races and even dressed up our pupils in traditional wedding costumes. Besides understanding the various customs relating to the wedding celebrations, the pupils also get to taste the delicacies and craftwork one would normally find during such occasions. In addition the pupils get to play the traditional games such as “chap teh”, “zeropoint”, “congkak” and four stones with their peers, teachers and parents.
The importance of community building can be seen through the pupils’ display of a HDB-liked structure. The display helped to reinforce the fact that people of different races and religions are able to live together in harmony within their community.
